Happy Tibetan Losar - The Year of the Dragon awaits us!
Losar, the Tibetan New Year, is one of the most important festivals in Tibetan culture. It is a time of joy, celebration and new beginnings. This year, 2024, Losar falls on February 10, and since it is the year 2151 according to the Tibetan calendar, we celebrate the Year of the Dragon .
The dragon is one of the twelve animals in the Tibetan zodiac and is considered a symbol of power, strength, prosperity and success. People born in the Year of the Dragon are often considered charismatic, courageous and energetic. The year 2151 is expected to be a year full of positive changes and new opportunities.
Losar celebrations typically last several days and include traditional dances, music, games and of course lots of delicious food. Families come together to celebrate and mark the beginning of the new year.
Some of the most important Losar traditions are:
- Gutor : A colorful ritual in which monks in masks drive away evil spirits and bring good luck for the New Year.
- Tschöpa : A traditional Losar pastry made from fried dough.
- Losar greeting cards : exchange of cards with good wishes for the New Year.
- Khata : Exchange of white scarves as a sign of respect and good wishes.
